There's no place on earth quite like the Grand Canyon State. It's not just our landscapes, which take in tall mountain ranges, swift rivers, grasslands, sand dunes, and cactus forests. It's not just our storied past, which reaches back thousands of years. It's not just our people, a vibrant blend of cultures and traditions. It's all these things, and the way they come together, that make a visit to Arizona a truly unforgettable experience.

Phoenix History
|
Approximately four miles from where Phoenix currently sits a small colony was formed by the year 1868. Going through numerous name changes which once started as Swilling's Mill, became Phoenix, suggested by Darrell Duppa. He thought it was appropriate for the new town that sprung from the ruins of a former civilization like the Phoenix; a mythical creature said to periodically burn itself to death and emerge from the ashes as a new phoenix. The town was incorporated in 1881.

Phoenix Nature
|
Far from being the arid, lifeless desert of cartoons, the state has its share of snowy mountain ranges, roaring rivers, huge pine forests and unusual flora and fauna. Snaking its way 277 miles, Arizona's Grand Canyon dominates northern Arizona, a vast, multi-hued chasm that entertains over 5 million guests a year. The grottoes of Kartchner Caverns State Park descend underground while the red sandstone spires of Monument Valley pierce the sky.

Phoenix Recreation
|
Boasting a movie-backdrop landscape, Arizona offers natural attractions and adventure in one of the world's most varied and beautiful playgrounds. Some of the most remarkable natural attractions are preserved in six National Forests, 21 Indian Reservations, 27 State Parks, and 26 National Parks, Monuments, Recreation Areas and Historic Sites. Most of these also host visitors from around the world who come to hike, bike, ski and raft through some of the wildest terrain on earth.
This medley of landforms attracts adventurous spirits, some of whom enjoy touring by helicopter, hot air balloon, jeep, raft or horse. Others come to challenge the very land itself -- hikers, mountain bikers, rock climbers, snow skiers, kayakers, and jet-powered skiers.
Arizona is a sports lover’s paradise, whether you are a spectator, participant or a little of both. The year-round sunny skies you never have to lose a day or two of playing on your vacation due to inclement weather.
Numbering over 325 golf courses and counting, Arizona has a tee time and a skill level for everyone. Several of the state's courses are included in Golf Digest's list of America's Greatest 100 Golf Courses, and 15 holes are on its list of the top 500 in the world. The PGA and LPGA each hold two tournaments in the state; the most popular, the Phoenix Open, draws over 400,000 spectators a year.
Fans flock to other professional sports, also. The 2001 World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball, NBA Phoenix Suns and NHL Phoenix Coyotes play in Phoenix and the NFL Arizona Cardinals play in Tempe. Avondale's Phoenix International Raceway hosts some of the largest crowds in the state for NASCAR and Indy races. The Old West would not seem the same without rodeos, held in almost every city in the state. And a sort of water rodeo, the Skat-Trak World Finals (the Super Bowl of jet-powered ski racers), is held each year in Lake Havasu City.
